I think this photograph creates a very jarring and contrasting image of how we percieve modern Lebanon to be. Taken at the time of Beirut's bombing, we clearly see the destruction in the background. The fact that the photographer has seemed to juxtapose the elite with the poor evokes mixed feelings in the viewer. We can't seem to fully comprehend how one sect of society can sit back and watch this happen to its fellow members. The rift in socio-economic power and status is significantlly present and visible to the viewer. The choice to detach themselves from this horror and act and watch as standbyers is also clearly visible. All in all, i think this photograph goes a long way to say, give, depict and evoke the many different nuances of Lebanese society and humanity in general.
